Brennan Othmann fulfills OHL championship dreams
When the buzzer sounded at the end of Game 6, Brennan Othmann and the Peterborough Pete’s defeated the London Knights 2-1 to claim the J. Ross Robertson Cup.
For the New York Rangers top prospect, he fulfilled his OHL dreams of winning a championship on Sunday night.
“When I was drafted into this league when I was 16 I said that I’m going to win a championship,” Othmann said. “To bring a championship to this city it’s really special and these fans deserve it.”

Earlier in the year, Othmann was part of a high-profile OHL trade. The Flint Firebirds dealt him to the Petes for San Jose Sharks prospect defenseman Artem Guryev, a 2024 second-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick.
Apparently, the trade request was initiated by Othmann some time ago which he confirmed with The Peterborough Examiner.
“Peterborough came to mind because it was close to home and I know a few players on the team I am close to,” Othmann said. “It’s been a fun couple of days trying to get organized and see what team I was going to go to and Peterborough obviously swayed a bit more than others.”
Othmann, 20, was selected by the Rangers in the first-round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. This past season, he registered 29 goals and 38 assists for 67 points in 56 matches split between the Flint Firebirds and Petes. In the playoffs, he led the team with 8 goals and 17 assists for 25 points in 23 playoff games.
“It feels great (to be the top scorer),” he said. “You can say you lead the team in points but in the playoffs it means nothing because you have to come as a team.”
It’s been a hell of a run for the young forward winning back-to-back Gold Medals for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships and now he’s gunning for a Memorial Cup.
“We’re going to go try and win it and bring back to the OHL,” Othmann added. “It’s what I’ve worked for and what we’ve all worked for.”
The Rangers are expected to give Othmann a serious look at training camp for the 2023-24 season.
