With the call-ups of Filip Chytil and Lias Andersson, the Rangers have and will continue to have a number of decisions to make. Where will they slot their abundance of top-nine forwards? How will they get quality ice time for the prospects while not stapling other guys to the bench? Who will shift to the wing and who will remain at center? For now, those questions were answered this morning.

After missing Tuesday night’s win while dealing with the flu, Henrik Lundqvist returned to the ice today ahead of the Rangers matchup with the Washington Capitals.
During warmups before Tuesday night’s matchup with the Florida Panthers, Mika Zibanejad was taken out of the New York Rangers lineup for an “Upper Body Injury.” David Desharnais took Zibanejad’s spot on the KZB line for the game which resulted in the Rangers dropping a see-saw type of game decided by a late minute turnover in the defensive zone. With this team in the midst of its’ worst start since 1980, Alain Vigneault is trying to find the combinations that will put his team in the best position to succeed. While the players deserve some of the blame for the Rangers’ 1-5 record, AV hasn’t exactly been aces either. Personally, I like giving coaches the benefit of the doubt, especially given the Rangers general success over the last few years under Vigneault. But the way this season has started, with the general ineptitude at times of his team and some of his decisions, it may be time for the 56-year-old head coach to be relieved of his duties. And we see a clear manifestation of this in his practice lines from today’s tune-up ahead of the Rangers matchup with the 3-2 Penguins tomorrow night.

Last night the Rangers put forth a performance that ranks among the worst by any team playing their first home game of the playoffs. Aside from Henrik Lundqvist who has been by a country mile, the Rangers best player in every game, no one was beyond criticism. That also goes for the head coach. Read more
