Former NHL heavyweight Colton Orr discusses the evolution of the enforcer in today’s game

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of talking with former New York Rangers enforcer Colton Orr. We discussed his role in the movie Goon: Last of the Enforcers which is out in theaters and available on digital. The most important topics we discussed were about fighting in the NHL and as fisticuffs decline where the role of enforcer has evolved to today.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview about the evolution of the modern day enforcer:

“Look at a guy like Matt Martin in Toronto. I think he’s a good example…he’s not just an enforcer. He’s a checking line forward, that’ll go out and hit and agitate, but he’ll back it up as well. You need that kind of player going forward.”

On Team Toughness:

“Team toughness is going to be very important. You’re not going to need to have the toughest guy in the league anymore. You need to buy into playing physical and standing together as a team. And that’s how you’re going to see the modern toughness and modern day enforcer type player look.”

Colton and I also discussed his career, his fights, toughest opponent and dream match up against one of the game’s fighting legends.
And what would a FullTilt Rangers Radio Podcast be without talking about the New York Rangers.
