Kevin Hayes out tonight in Pittsburgh

Latest update on tonight’s Rangers versus Penguins contest.

This morning, the Rangers announced that Kevin Hayes will not play tonight when the Rangers battle the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Kevin Hayes missed the final two periods of the Rangers 2-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights prior to the bye week, and coach Alain Vigneault said Hayes was “50-50” when asked if Hayes had a chance at playing against the Islanders. Hayes did play, and looked fine as he scored a power-play goal 14:25 into the first period.

Kevin Hayes is out tonight due to a contusion.

WebMD defines a contusion as:

Bruises (contusions) occur when small blood vessels under the skin tear or rupture, most often from a twist, bump, or fall. Blood leaks into tissues under the skin and causes a black-and-blue color that often turns purple, red, yellow, and green as the bruise heals.

Athletes generally recover from a contusion within 2-4 weeks, but these injuries are common and not too severe, so we can potentially see Hayes return sooner than that.

We have no word on who will take Kevin Hayes’ place in the line-up tonight, but Paul Carey will probably take his place. Coach Alain Vigneault will address the media later.

As for McDonagh, he has not looked 100% once this season, and suffered an abdominal strain earlier in the season that he is most likely still playing through. However, McDonagh averages 25:00 minutes a game and most likely is just getting a rest so he can be prepared for tonight’s game, which you can read more about here.
