Reports have surfaced out of the KHL that Ilya Kovalachuk is set to sign a 2-3 year deal worth about 6 million per.

Per Sport Express:

As it became known “SE” SKA forward Ilya Kovalchuk reached a preliminary agreement on the transition to the “Rangers” and is likely to join the club from New York. 34-year-old striker will be able to sign the contract only on July 1 – the day the market opens free agents in the NHL . According to our data, Kovalchuk’s salary in the Rangers will be about six million dollars per season, the contract term is still under discussion – the parties are negotiating a two-year or three-year contract.

So the Rangers address 2 major issues here:

  1. A veteran primary scorer
  2. A Russian veteran to groom and lead this Red wave in NY (Buchnevich, Namestnikov, Shestyorkin, and Rykov to name a few)

Jeff Gorton set a press conference for today. He will likely address the search for a new coach and the Kovalchuk reports.
