Rangers Roundup: Peter Laviolette pushing right buttons, and a new third jersey?
The New York Rangers will take a pre-game skate on Saturday at Rogers Arena prior to facing the Vancouver Canucks as they look to stay perfect on this 5-game road trip which currently stands at 3-0-0.
New head coach Peter Laviolette has this team going in the right direction and it seems to all start with practice.
Here’s today’s latest buzz surrounding the Blueshirts.
Peter Laviolette driving competition
Laviolette, 58, was hired by the Rangers this past offseason becoming the 37th head coach in franchise history. For his NHL coaching career, he’s amassed a record of 757-505-25-150 with a 78-76 mark in the playoffs. To date, 5 of those wins have come behind the Rangers bench. He’s also been to three Stanley Cup Finals (2006, 2010, 2017) winning with the Carolina Hurricanes on his first try.
One of the biggest differences early on are the Blueshirts’ spirted practices, especially on non-game days.
From the day he was introduced as the new Rangers coach, Laviolette has stressed the importance of compete levels in order to win the Stanley Cup.
“For me it’s also about – you prepare yourself to play playoff hockey.” Laviolette said. “When you watch the playoff games, it’s a reminder that the compete inside the game is what makes teams great. You have to practice that on a daily basis. It has to start in training camp and become part of your DNA.”
New York Rangers third jersey leak?
According to Chris Creamer of SportsLogos, it appears photos of a brand new Rangers’ third jersey have leaked on Reddit.
The Rangers used the shield as their primary logo for just two seasons from 1976 to 1978 because fans really didn’t like it.
No official word on if these are really the new third jerseys for this season, but if so, they’ll likely be unveiled for the NHL Stadium Series. MetLife Stadium will play host to the Rangers vs Islanders contest set for February 18.
