New York Rangers Jesper Fast May Need offseason surgery

During exit interviews, New York Rangers Head Coach Alain Vigneault mentioned: “one player will need surgery.” A source close to the team has confirmed that player is Jesper Fast who will require off-season hip surgery.

After returning from a shoulder separation suffered in March on a hit from Alexander Ovechkin, Fast returned to the lineup and was one of the more effective Rangers players during the postseason registering three goals and three assists along with a +4 in 12 GP, while leading all Rangers forwards in the playoffs in Shorthanded TOI.

The cause of the injury is unknown at this time, as well as the reason for the team not publicly disclosing the injury.

While speculation could lead one to believe it would coincide with the expansion draft, the NHL rules state that “Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive game (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club’s player exposure requirements.” This rule does not apply to this case. However, as many have speculated that the Vegas Golden Knights would select Jesper Fast, an injury of this sort may cause Vegas to reconsider and look deeper at other options the Rangers present.

Keep in mind that Vegas will most likely not be a contender immediately and will look to stockpile young talent not just in the draft, but throughout the season. One way of doing so is by selecting a player with a team-friendly AAV, in a contract year who has the ability to put up numbers and would be a great deadline trade bait. One such player that fits that mold is Michael Grabner.

Stay tuned for more on this as it unfolds, as well as more news on the expansion draft and any ramifications the Fast injury could have.

  • Maybe Rick Carpinello should start writing on this site as well.

  • Keep it coming,thank you!

  • like quickie-skates hard every shift–AV likes him also–talks about him alot–hope he stays a ranger

  • Man I really hope we don’t lose Fast. I never could understand all the fans that would mention his name when it came to trade talks. The guy is so unappreciated but I think that’s changing a little bit as we see his hard work pay off in the playoffs. He may not be the most gifted player on the rangers but he’s probably the most consistent. You can always count on a strong effort every shift and the guy almost never makes a mistake. However having said all that I’m wondering who will be the one to go to the exspandtion draft. I think Lindbergh is another hard worker and he ended up playing some pretty good hockey later in the season and chipped in on the goal scoring in the playoffs too. It took him a little while to get going coming off his hip surgery which also makes me think about Fast having to go through that now. Then there’s Grabner who I think fit into this team perfectly. Even without all the goals he scored it was a big help having him on the PK. The guy seemed to have a breakaway every game. It makes me wonder how come Lreider doesn’t get all those chances with his speed. I realize Kreider is playing against top line D men but it still seems like he could have more chances the. He does. It’s a hard decision to make cause while Fast may be the more consistent player Lindbergh is a center and looks like a real good 4th line center. Or are we gonna see something out of left field like leaving Stepan exposed to drop his salary. The problem with that is then we don’t get nothing back for a guy we probably could have traded last year for so,e help on D. Oh well, we will see soon enough what they decide on.
