The New York Rangers hope to continue last season’s success when wearing their third jerseys during the 10 times they’ll do so in 2024-25.

This Rangers will be hard-pressed to match the success from last season when wearing the alternate jerseys, though. The Rangers debuted the latest-model third jerseys on Dec. 10, 2023, when they defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1. They went on to win nine of their 10 third-jersey games; the only defeat was a 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 26.

Seven of the 10 third-jersey games this season will come against Metropolitan Division rivals, including two against the Pittsburgh Penguins (Dec. 6 and Feb. 7). There’s also one each against the New York Islanders (Nov. 3), New Jersey Devils (Jan. 9), Washington Capitals (March 5), Columbus Blue Jackets (March 9) and Philadelphia Flyers (April 9). The games against the Capitals and Blue Jackets will come on successive home dates.

The only other Eastern Conference team they’ll face when wearing their third jerseys is the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, who defeated the Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final last season. That Oct. 24 game at Madison Square Garden will be the first showing of the third jerseys this season.

The two third-jersey games against Western Conference teams will be played in the afternoon. The Rangers will wear their alternate sweaters against the Kings on Saturday, Dec. 14, and the Colorado Avalanche in a matinee on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The third jerseys have a navy blue base with the Rangers’ traditional shield logo front and center. There is no striping around the collar; however, there are 18 red, white, and royal blue stripes on each sleeve and each sock. Also, there are three thin stripes, one of each color, around the waist at the bottom of the sweater.

The striping pattern refers to MSG’s lights, New York’s traffic and the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a New York City subway tile pattern that reads “Blueshirts” inside the back collar.

Wearing the shield logo is a rarity for the Rangers; they’ve traditionally worn their team name diagonally across the front of their jerseys.

The shield logo was worn on the front of both the home and road jerseys in 1976-77 and 1977-78 during John Ferguson’s tenure as general manager. When Fred Shero took over as GM/coach on June 2, 1978, one of the first things he did was get rid of the shield logo on the front, reverting to the diagonal “Rangers” on the home jerseys and “New York” on the road sweaters. The diagonal “Rangers” returned to the road jerseys in 1987.

The shield logo reappeared during the League’s Vintage Uniform program in the early 2000s, and on the Rangers’ uniforms for the 2012 NHL Winter Classic against the Philadelphia Flyers.
