Giant Rangers prospect extends point streak, but Wolf Pack fall again

Matt Rempe isn’t the only towering forward the New York Rangers need to follow on the Hartford Wolf Pack roster these days. That’s because Dylan Roobroeck is finding his footing as a pro in the American Hockey League.

The 6-foot-7 forward scored Hartford’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday. The goal extended his point streak to a team-high four consecutive games and gives him three on the season, third most on the Wolf Pack behind forwards Brett Berard (five) and Bo Groulx (four) in nine games.

Each of his points (three goals, one assist) this season have come in the point streak after the 20-year-old was held without a point throughout the first five games. Clearly, the kid is hitting his stride.

Speaking of stride, Roobroeck used his long powerful skating stride to beat two Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenders to a chip pass over the blue line from Hartford’s Nathan Sucese. He then beat Tristan Jarry — yes, THAT Tristan Jarry — with a quick forehand shot from the bottom of the left circle to finish off the scoring play at 16:30 of the second period Saturday.

Roobroeck knows a thing or two about scoring goals. The sixth-round pick (No. 178 overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft, scored 26 goals for Oshawa in the OHL last season. It was a season when he showcased his total package, assisting on 46 goals, racking up 101 penalty minutes and finishing with 72 points in 68 games.

He led Oshawa with 11 goals in 21 postseason games, ending up second on the team with 26 points.

“I just try be an all-around player,” Roobroeck said at the start of Rangers rookie camp in September. “I want to be out there at the end of a game; I want be out there on the power play. Just try to do my best. If I need to stick up for a teammate, then I stick up for a teammate. Just do whatever I can to help the team.”

Giant Rangers prospect looks up to Matt Rempe in many ways

Rempe was assigned to the Wolf Pack on Saturday but didn’t play in the road game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The popular 22-year-old, who played only three of New York’s first 10 games this season after being a big sensation in 2023-24, is the rare player Roobroeck will, literally, look up to.

The rookie pointed out that he’ll also figuratively look up to his 6-foot-9 teammate.

“It’s good to see other guys here (in the Rangers organization) that have the same style, same size,” Roobroeck explained. “I just ask them questions if I need anything. I look up to them and try to follow in their footsteps.”

Outside of Rempe, the Rangers still have Adam Edstrom, who’s 6-foot-6, on the roster. The Rangers also drafted 6-foot-7 forward Nathan Aspinall this past spring.

“It’s a good attribute to have, my size … if I didn’t have it, I wouldn’t be as much of a force out there,” Roobroeck said. “I just have to use my size to my advantage, intimidate guys.”

A natural center, who can also play on the wing, Roobroeck is putting it all together right now for the Wolf Pack, who’ve lost three of their past four games (1-2-1). Soon, he’ll be in the lineup with Rempe, two giants trying to get Hartford back on track.
