During a week when New York Rangers prospects Gabe Perreault and Drew Fortescue led the United Stated to their second straight gold medal at the 2025 World Junior Championship, six others returned to NCAA action to begin the New Year.

If 2021 fourth-round pick Brody Lamb continues his scoring pace, he will force the Rangers to sign him to an NHL entry-level contract at the conclusion of Minnesota’s season. Friday night, Minnesota defeated Mercyhurst 6-2 in non-conference play. In the second period with the Gophers leading 2-0 and on the power play, Lamb beat everyone to a loose puck in the crease, and scored to make it 3-0.

The power-play tally proved to be Lamb’s second game-winner of the season. He finished the game with two shots on goal, and blocked two shots.

Saturday, Lamb was scoreless despite having a game-high sevens shots on goal in a 5-2 win for Minnesota. The junior forward has 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points in 21 games. With the weekend sweep, Minnesota improved to 17-3-2 overall and is ranked third in the US College Hockey Online Division I Men’s Poll. The Gophers will face Ohio State this weekend for a pair of games.
