With the NCAA Ice Hockey season on break for the Christmas holiday, New York Rangers prospect Brody Lamb of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s ice hockey team is tied for the national lead in goals scored with 12 through 19 games played.

The 21-year-old forward was selected in the fourth round (No. 104 overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft. During the 2021-22 season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL, Lamb ranked fourth on the team with 41 points in 62 games played. His 12 power-play goals were a team best. As mentioned in EliteProspects 2021 NHL Draft Guide, “The core of Lamb’s effectiveness is his shooting ability and passing skill. He explodes through his shot, transferring his weight over the puck before rolling his wrists through the release. Although he looks to shoot more than pass, he’s an efficient playmaker who finds teammates on the weak side, draws in pressure, and uses hook and slip passes to connect.”

After making his collegiate debut on opening night in 2022-23 against Lindenwood, Lamb made an appearance in 39 of 40 games during his freshman campaign with Minneosta, finishing the season with four goals and four assists for eight points. He closed the season with a plus-three rating, helping the Gophers win the Big Ten conference regular season championship and be runners-up at the 2023 Frozen Four.

As a sophomore, Lamb more than tripled his offensive output from his freshman campaign, scoring 12 goals, 15 assists, and 27 points. He was one of nine Gophers to skate in all 39 games. Lamb earned Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week honors on November 14th after closing a weekend series against the Michigan Wolverines with two goals and two assists.

Now a junior, Lamb is leading Minnesota to a 15-3-2 overall record at the break. His 12 goals and seven power-play goals are tied for the NCAA lead.

On Oct. 29, Lamb was named the Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week after posting a natural hat trick, scoring three times on the power play, against St. Thomas on Oct. 26 at Xcel Energy Center for the first three-goal game of his NCAA career. He became the first Gopher to score three power-play goals in a game since Ryan Potulny did it in a 6-3 win at Michigan on Nov. 25, 2005.

Lamb was also named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week on December 3rd following a weekend series against Alaska Fairbanks, when he had one goal and two assists. The junior was credited with an assist on the Gophers lone goal scored in a 1-1 tie. He scored his first-career shorthanded goal Saturday to spark a four-goal third period which helped the Minnesota rally for the victory.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Lamb has been somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife this season, finding himself up and down the lineup, skating at all three forward positions. His father Jeff played four years of NCAA Division I hockey at Denver before playing nearly 200 professional games with the Maine Mariners (AHL) and Phoenix Roadrunners (IHL).

It is expected Brody will sign an entry-level contract with the Rangers and turn professional at the conclusion of the NCAA season. Should he elect to return for a senior year, the Rangers hold his signing rights until August 15, 2026 according to PuckPedia.

Minnesota is currently third in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll and occupy the same spot in USA Hockey/The Rink Live College Hockey Poll. The Gophers will return from the break Jan. 3 and 4, when they host Mercyhurst in non-conference play at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
