The New York Rangers picked up a regulation win against the Sabres on Friday night but dodged a bullet on the tying goal in the final minute.

Two reviews took place. One confirmed the puck went in and the other was for offsides. After video review, the goal was disallowed but it appears the refs got it wrong.

NHL says Sabres tying goal should have counted

Victor Olofsson had a goal disallowed with 57 seconds left while the Sabres were using the extra attacker when officials deemed Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Dahlin was offside.

“We knew right away (it was offside), as soon as they entered the zone our video guys said it was off,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “You really weren’t feeling the pressure when they did score because we knew.”

Apparently, everyone got it wrong.

“The original call on the ice, ‘good goal,’ should have stood because video replay could not definitively determine that the stick of Buffalo Player Victor Olofsson touched the puck before Rasmus Dahlin tagged up,” NHL VP Colin Campbell said in a statement. “In instances when video replay cannot definitively determine a play, League policy is to stay with the original call on the ice.”

Rangers got lucky on that one.

Adam Fox hits 100 assists

Fox notched his 23rd and 24th assists, breaking a tie with Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman for the league lead among defensemen.

On Mika Zibanejad’s power-play goal 4:48 into the game, he picked up the secondary assist and then registered the primary assist on Alexis Lafreniere’s tally midway through the second.

Fox’s second assist was a purposeful wrist shot from above the left circle that went off Luukkonen’s pads and to Lafreniere for the easy tap-in from the right side of the crease at 9:47 of the second. It was an amazing play selection at high speed that Fox has continued to dazzle fans with.

For Fox, that was his 100th career assist, which tied him for second fastest for defensemen in Rangers history. Both he and Brian Leetch did it in their 150th game. Sergei Zubov was the fastest to complete the feat in 127 games.

Amazing.
