The New York Rangers are expected to ask Rick Nash for his list on or before the July 1st opening of free agency.

Rumblings within the organization about moving Rick Nash has been going on for months. This site in particular has well documented all the noise surrounding #61.

The notion about trading Nash was started last June when his contract turned from a no move to a no trade. At that time, the Rangers had been ousted by the Lightning in the ECF and Glen Sather was getting ready to relinquish his GM responsibilities.

After coming so close in 2014 and just one game away from a back to back Final appearance, the Rangers opted to go at it again with basically the same group. Now after an embarrassing first round exit, and up against the wall due to the cap, Nash is going to be moved.

Hockey Insider’s from Bob McKenzie and Elliotte Friedman have been reporting that the Rangers are ready to deal and that Rick Nash’s name is the one that they know is out there. What remains to be seen is exactly when Jeff Gorton will ask Nash for his list of teams.

At this point, the best answers I have received from those with knowledge of NHL contracts state that it can range from “at request” or “July 1st. It really depends on how Rick Nash’s contract is written, and no one has access to that save him, his agent, and the Rangers.

Jeff Gorton is going to make some big moves and Rick Nash will likely be the biggest of them all.
