Forget the smoke, this is a 5 alarm fire! Ryan Callahan is on his way out the door and Sather is in a rush to make it happen. FTR has learned that Slats is looking to add Jesper Fast or Ryan Bourque in order to land a top 6 forward for Ryan Callahan. Depending on the player, Danny Kristo is also available.

CALLAHAN WILL NOT BUDGE

Today at practice, Callahan clearly wanted to avoid the topic. Especially since his agent claims 7 million a year over 7 years is a discount. I believe he and his agent are playing a game of chicken, the problem is they are playing by themselves.

Glen Sather appreciates Ryan Callahan, just not at superstar money. This is the man that brought in legit scoring studs in Pavel Bure, Jaromir Jagr and Rick Nash for players just like Cally. It looks like within the next 24-72 hours, he’s going to do it again.

But for who? Any names would be full speculation on my part. Although three hot teams out West are Los Angeles, St. Louis and Vancouver. As for who? Richards or Carter in LA standout but I can’t firmly put a finger on anyone else. Just be ready because it’s coming.

DAN GIRARDI’S STATUS

Rumor has it that they are least talking and may be close. Girardi looking for a reasonable 5-6 years at about 5.5 million a season. Let me just say what some of you may not want to hear, Girardi is more valuable to the Rangers than Callahan. He’s a right handed top line defenseman. You can’t easily replace that. While Ryan Callahan is a 50 point guy at best and can be.

I expect a deal between the two sides to be announced before March 5th. Probably sooner than that.

WHO ELSE IS AVAILABLE?

Even though the Rangers had an easy opening for Derek Dorsett to rejoin the lineup, JT Miller has been given that spot. Dan Carcillo has also supplanted Dorsett on the 4th line. All this points to Dorsett being moved for a pick by the deadline.

Two other big concerns for the Rangers are Brian Boyle and Anton Stralman. Both players are UFA’s and could fetch a decent draft pick or prospect at the deadline. However, their value to a playoff drive this season means more than a “shot in the dark” pick this summer. Sather should keep them both and try and retain them in the offseason.
