Rangers-Hurricanes Traverse City Game 2

The Rangers rookies played their second game of the Traverse City tournament this afternoon against youngsters from the Carolina Hurricanes. There where three lineup changes with Luc Smith, Nicolas Werbik, and Brenden Kotyk drew into the lineup. Robin Kovacs, Malte Stromwall, and Sergei Zborovskiy were healthy scratches.

It was bad

There is no real way to sugarcoat this game. The Hurricanes were the much better team all over the ice. Alexander Georgiev was the Blueshirts starter in goal after backing up on Friday night. The netminder was one of the few bright spots, keeping his team in the game in stopping 29 out of 32 shots. In the first period alone, New York was out shot 13-3. The puck possession was even more lopsided. The ‘canes were only up 1-0 after one because Georgiev was excellent.

In the second period Carolina broke through for 2 more goals. Defenseman Kotyk seemed to struggle in his first game, though he had plenty of company. The Rangers power play which looked dangerous the night before, went 0-4 today. They were pressured all over the ice, and continued to lose the possession battle. After two periods, it was 3-0 Hurricanes.
The third period saw the Rangers get some of their better chances including nice opportunities by Ryan Gropp and Tim Gettinger. They had a 6 on 4 late in the third, after pulling the goalie, but still were stifled, and shut out by Carolina’s rookies.
The Rangers are off on Sunday, then play The Red Wings on Monday Night.
