Rangers Roundup: Mike Grier named Sharks GM, NHL Draft, and latest rumors
The New York Rangers were excited to see Mike Grier named the new GM of the San Jose Sharks. It was a significant moment for the NHL as he is the first Black GM in league history.
Grier, 47, leaves his position with the New York Rangers as their hockey operations adviser. His career in the game spans 1,060 contests as a player from 1996 to 2001. From there he worked his way up starting as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks and then with the New Jersey Devils as an assistant coach from 2018-20.
“I am extremely proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to be the general manager of the San Jose Sharks,” Grier said in a statement. “Along with my staff, I look forward to the challenge of building a fast, competitive, and hardworking team that Sharks fans will enjoy watching and be proud of.”
Chris Drury congratulates Mike Grier
After Chris Drury was promoted to President and GM in May of 2021, one of his first acts was to bring on Mike Grier as a special adviser. The two have been friends since their college hockey days at BU.
“I would like to congratulate Mike on being named the general manager of the San Jose Sharks,” Drury wrote in a statement. “I have had the privilege of knowing Mike for nearly three decades, and I have always had the utmost respect for him as a person, player and executive.
“I am proud to call him a friend and look forward to seeing what he will do with the Sharks. We will miss him in New York, but we wish him and his family all the best with this new opportunity.”
