After signing his first NHL contract with the Rangers just a few weeks ago, prospect Ville Meskanen talked about why he signed with the Blueshirts.

In speaking with Finnish site Kiekkoarenna, Meskanen said that it was “an easy choice” for him to sign with the Rangers. In addition to Meskanen wanting the Rangers, he said it was very apparent to him that the Rangers had a lot of interest in the 22-year-old forward.

“The Rangers made the choice easy for me,” Meskanen said. “They really want me and I want to go to New York and join the Rangers. They’re giving me a chance, and that’s all I really need.”NY Rangers

The right-handed Meskanen tallied 44 points (24G, 20A) last season for Finnish league club Ilves, placing him 15th in the league rankings and six spots ahead of fellow Rangers prospect Patrik Virta, who finished his season with 40 points (16G, 24A) with TPS.

One of the reasons Meskanen was highly coveted by Jeff Gorton and the Rangers is his ability on the power play. Of Meskanen’s 24 goals, nine came with his team on the man-advantage. This gives the Rangers another sniper from the left circle, something the second power play unit was lacking when Vinni Lettieri was not in the lineup. Meskanen still has to make the opening night roster in training camp, but if he does, the Rangers should be pleased with what they are getting.

Ville Meskanen took a big step forward during the last few years under the leadership of Karri Kivi’s coaching team, but the NHL is again a great demonstration of the quality work done at Ilves Juniors. We are happy throughout the organization for Ville and wish him luck in North America. – Ilves Hockey Director Risto Jalo
