Rangers Roundup: Quinn’s staff, Kovalchuk in California, and more

Ilya Kovalchuk (ESPN)

The latest buzz around the Rangers.

Rangers working on Quinn’s assistants

According to Larry Brooks, the Rangers are working on David Quinn’s coaching staff but are not in any rush. During his introductory presser, Quinn confirmed that Benoit Allaire would be back. However, Brooks is now indicating that Lindy Ruff is still in the mix to be on the staff.

SNY Rangers also went on to mention, Joe Sacco, Todd Richards, and Jack Capuano as possible assistant coach candidates. A few weeks back, I wrote a piece predicting Quinn’s staff and in it I mentioned Ruff as a third assistant (the eye in the sky coach).

Ilya in Cali

Looks like Ilya has met with the L.A. Kings today and will be meeting with San Jose tomorrow. Both teams are looking for scoring depth on the wings.

Namestnikov To Be Traded?

Vlad Namestnikov who will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer, is the most talked about Ranger to be traded. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see it. First off, he is young and highly skilled. He’s also versatile and can play center and wing. Those points alone are reasons not to move him.

The main reason I don’t see them trading him is simple, he was the main piece returned for Ryan McDonagh AND J.T. Miller. While I understand that Brett Howden and Libor Hajek have great potential, Namestnikov is the only bonafide NHL piece to come over in that deal.

Sorry experts, I just can’t see them moving his rights.
