TSN’s Dreger says the Rangers interested in Leafs Mike Santorelli, I’m wondering why?

In yesterday’s edition of “Insider Trading”, a segment on TSN that features insiders Darren Dreger, Bob McKenzie and Pierre Lebrun – Dreger stated the Rangers are interested in Mike Santorelli.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in such a mess that they are entertaining trading everyone. It is so bad that they are arresting fans and banning them from going to not only Leaf’s games but anything owned by MLSE Properties.

Back to the “insider talk”, Darren Dreger said about the Rangers, “they’re looking for a center-man and there might be a Leaf connection here.” This is the point where he brings up Mike Santorelli and the fact that the Blueshirts tried to sign him in the offseason. NY would lose out to Toronto who obtained his services for $1.5M thanks to the Rangers having limited cap space left.

Dreger added “if the Leafs keep sliding”, Santorelli may be moved at the deadline. So does he really fit what the Rangers have built here? Would the Rangers send down a Jesper Fast or JT Miller to free up cap and roster space for Mike Santorelli?

This season, the 29 year old center is only winning 47.244% of his draws per ESPN. NY is still near the bottom of the league in face-offs, so I’m not sure I understand how that helps. Especially if sending down a Jesper Fast or JT Miller to make room is the result.

If the Leafs were willing to take Tanner Glass off our hands, I’d make the deal tomorrow. However, Toronto is looking to improve the team’s skating and offensive attributes either today or down the road. Glass doesn’t help them there.

Whether the Rangers are really looking at Mike Santorelli or not, isn’t the story. What is however, is the fact the Rangers are looking for a center like I’ve been saying all along.
