Update on Rangers Prospect Tyler Wall

Union Leader

Taken by the Rangers in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Tyler Wall has just completed his sophomore season with the UMass-Lowell River Hawks. The goalie prospect had a good start to his development in his freshman year in Hockey East. However, last season with UMass-Lowell, Tyler Wall had played limited games and did struggle. Entering his junior year, the Rangers prospect hopes to rebound from his slump during the 2017-18 campaign. Tyler Wall joins another Rangers prospect, Adam Huska in Hockey East. Be on the lookout for games between UConn and UMass-Lowell as the potential for both prospects to square off could be a possibility next season.

Freshman Year

In his first year with the River Hawks, Tyler played in 37 games, an impressive number of games for a rookie goalie in Hockey East.  He recorded a 2.06 GAA and a .918 SV%, which included some superb saves. The prospect was off to a good start. Development-wise, he was on point.

Sophomore Year

The past season was a struggle for the young prospect. Tyler Wall played in 12 games last season with a 3.98 GAA and a .868 SV%. The prospect earned his first win of the 2017-18 season in late January.  He has struggled, but he is a fighter and will not throw in the towel based on his performance in one season. I have a lot of confidence that the goalie can learn from his mistakes and strive to be a competitive athlete. He will bounce back for his junior year.

Tyler Wall was playing with a struggling team as well. The River Hawks were not as strong last season and had a lot of seniors who performed well. In addition, the roster had changed dramatically, which included a new goalie. The 2016-17 season was good all around in Lowell, with a record of 27-11-3. If we look at last season, they went  17-19. Tyler had to take in tough games for his team when they were not playing well. His confidence should not be killed and only should get better. Playing with adversity is a plus as well for a young goalie like Tyler.

Junior Year And Beyond

Tyler Wall will be ready to go for the upcoming college hockey season in Hockey East.  Him and Adam Huska will try to be the top dogs in the crease for their respective teams. Both goalies will grow and develop nicely.

After his junior year, which will be next summer, the Rangers have the option to sign Tyler Wall to an Entry Level Contract. If they choose to do so, Tyler would not return to the River Hawks and would begin his professional career in Hartford or Maine. Another route the Rangers can take is to wait to sign him after his completion of senior year. This would allow more seasoning for the young prospect as well.

Currently, Tyler Wall is an unsigned goalie prospect. However, the Rangers own his rights and should sign him down the road. The question is the timing of his signing.  We will have to wait and see.
